Modern technology allows parents to work from home but it is not a cakewalk and has its share of challenges. A study in the US, done in 2010, shows that the work hours of single parents who work from home, have increased by 23% from 1979 to 2008 and 12% where both the parents work from home.
Now more parents are balancing their house work and office, from the comfort of their home and can do without going to office. However, it has its share of problems. A parent with a toddler is in a difficult situation. A home is not an office where you can cut yourself off and concentrate on your work. At home, the child needs constant attention. To work you need quality quiet time.
According to a study by Forbes Women, though 92% of women are under stress while working in the office, those who work from home are no better. 89% find work from home stressful.
Nina Clark, who teaches political science online, for UC Berkley, uses rewards as a means to get time to work. Her understanding with her kids is that if she works undisturbed, they get a treat. She says the challenge is to get quiet time, to focus on your work.
Others, like Greg Terry feel that the stress felt in work from home situation is more than made up by the fact that you do not have to commute to office.
According to experts, work from home is successful if there is happiness in the family. If working from home creates a negative atmosphere, then it is not worth the effort.
